Bhaktapur

A living medieval city of terracotta architecture, woodcarved temples, and potters' squares — the best-preserved Newari town in the Kathmandu Valley.

Bhaktapur

Overview

Bhaktapur, also called Bhadgaon or the "City of Devotees", is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located 13 km east of Kathmandu. The medieval city retains its 15th-century character with narrow brick lanes, intricately carved wooden windows, and three distinct Durbar Squares. The Nyatapola Temple — Nepal's tallest pagoda at five stories — dominates the skyline. The city is famous for the Juju Dhau (king curd), a thick buffalo-milk yoghurt sold in clay pots, and the Bhaktapur Pottery Square where traditional wheel-thrown pottery is still made. Entry requires a separate ticket (₹1,500 for SAARC nationals).
