The holy city of Sita, birthplace of the goddess in Hindu mythology, and home to the magnificent Janaki Mandir — a major pilgrimage site for Indian devotees.

Janakpur is one of the most significant Hindu pilgrimage cities in Nepal and holds special importance for Indian devotees as the birthplace of Goddess Sita and the venue of her marriage to Lord Ram. The Janaki Mandir, built in 1911 in Mughal-Rajput style and dedicated to Sita, is the centrepiece. The city hosts large fairs during Vivah Panchami (November/December) that draw hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from both India and Nepal. Janakpur is also the cultural capital of the Maithili community and is known for Mithila painting — a folk art tradition recognised by UNESCO. The recently restored Janakpur–Jaynagar narrow-gauge railway connects the city to Bihar, though service is intermittent.
